The Memory of Elephants

The Memory of Elephants

If you visit my Facebook page you’ll see a video of our trip to the elephant orphanage at Pinawale in Sri Lanka. These lumbering yet graceful creatures are cared for by local people who take care of all their needs.

Many of the elephants have been injured by land mines from the recent Tamil/Singhale war and some are held in large wooden cradles and nurtured to recovery. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the sight of the baby elephants being fed milk by the tourists or the herd rushing down the busy Sri Lankan streets for their daily bath in the river.

Such care for “dumb” animals reminds me of the need for kindness and compassion in our society. At this time a great light has gone out of our world in the departure of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela; a man who learned Afrikaans in prison just so he could talk to his gaolers about their families.

Madiba’s legacy is a world where the possibility of reconciliation between enemies is closer and the promotion of love and generosity of spirit, even amongst politicians, can be an experienced reality.

They say: “an elephant never forgets”. Let us be sure to never forget that one person CAN make a difference; one person can change the world.
